session details, tips, and answers
It's best to schedule your engagement session 6–8+ months before your wedding, especially if you're wanting to use your phots as Save The Dates. Each season offers a unique backdrop for gorgeous photos – even winter! The session's time of day will depend on the season and location and will be finalized at booking.
When you're ready to schedule your 1-hour session, please email at alexis@alexisralston.com so I can secure your date in my calendar.

There are countless landmarks, buildings, parks, and more around South Carolina that can accommodate your engagement session. I highly recommend picking a spot that's special to you and your fiancé. Over the years, I've been to dozens of locations with couples. I'm happy to recommend locations or help you search for one!
02.
don't forget the weather
no bright or neon colors
avoid bold patterns
when in doubt, go neutral
accent with accessories
use complimentary colors
Picking your outfit color palette and planning your outfits for your engagement session is the first (and most important) step in creating gorgeous photos! While you should consider the weather, it's best to be comfortable and confident in what you wear. I've collected some do's and don'ts for picking out your outfit, along with some outfit inspiration from previous couples.

take advantage of a hair/makeup trial
get a manicure for close-up shots
clean your engagement ring
Pampering yourself is always a great idea, right?! Although not necessary, there are a few to-dos that will elevate your engagement photos:
trust me as your expert photographer
relax, have fun, and just be you
There's absolutely no reason to worry about your session. I like to look at your session as a way to get to know each other and have some fun! As you approach your session, keep in mind these 2 things:
04.
Life happens! If you need to reschedule due to illness, emergencies, or unforeseen circumstances, just let me know as soon as possible. We’ll find a new date that works!
06. What if we need to reschedule?
You can expect your final edited gallery within 3-4 weeks after your session. I am happy to send some preview images within a few days if you'd like so you can share and enjoy them while you wait!
05. When will we receive our engagement photos?
You’re not alone—most couples feel this way! My goal is to make the session relaxed and fun. I’ll guide you with natural poses and prompts that help you interact genuinely, so your photos feel authentic and not stiff or overly posed.
04. We’re awkward in front of the camera. Will you help us pose?
Get plenty of rest, drink water, and pamper yourselves a little! Freshly cleaned and styled hair, light makeup (for both of you, if applicable), and well-groomed hands (for ring shots!) help you feel your best. Also, try to plan your outfits ahead of time so you’re not scrambling last-minute.
03. How should we prepare for the session?
Absolutely! If your furry friend is part of your love story, they are more than welcome. I recommend bringing a friend or family member to help handle them when they’re not in photos and packing treats and a favorite toy to keep them happy.
02. Can we include our pet in the session?
The best light for dreamy, romantic photos is during golden hour, which is about 1–2 hours before sunset. The soft, warm glow creates the most flattering light. If a sunrise session fits your schedule better, that’s also a gorgeous time for photos with a fresh, airy feel.
01. What time of day is best for photos?
